One measure of a champion sire’s quality is his ability to keep producing fresh talent, in every season of every year.
It’s a test that Arrowfield Stud’s Redoute’s Choice keeps passing and this week was no exception with six winners in three days.
Aliberani (3f Redoute’s Choice – African Rain by Woodman) was first out of the blocks at Sandown on Wednesday. She is trained by Peter Moody for owner Gary Pfeiler and is from a daughter of Group 1 mare Savana City. Always rated highly by the stable, Moody predicts better wins ahead for the filly.
Later in the day, Ridotto closed the card with an all-the-way victory at Canterbury. It made amends for a most unlucky loss first-up and he looks set for a productive winter campaign.
Ridotto (4g Redoute’s Choice – Li Lo Lill by Umatilla) is trained Chris Waller for the Ingham family. His dam was a G3 winner of the 2001 SAJC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
On Wednesday night Australian time, Arrowfield-bred filly Honorine made it two-from-two against older fillies and mares at Clairwood. The South African based youngster had won like a progressive type on debut at Scottsville last month.
Honorine (2f Redoute’s Choice – Zaldivar by Honour And Glory) is trained by Mike de Kock for Wilgerbosdrift Stud owner Mary Slack and was an $80,000 buy from Bellerive Stud at the 2011 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.
Zaldivar is carrying a three-quarter sibling to Honorine by Redoute’s Choice’s high-class son Beneteau.
Back in Australia on Thursday, Mark Kavanagh unveiled an aptly named colt called Sheer Talent at Seymour.
Sheer Talent (2c Redoute’s Choice – St. Katherine by Barathea) cost $350,000 from the Baramul Stud draft at the 2011 Magic Millions and breeder Gerry Harvey bought a share back after the colt changed hands on the Gold Coast.
Sheer Talent is a brother to G3 winner Kittens and their dam St. Katherine is a half-sister to G1 winners Fraternity, Telesto and Bonanova from the family of the great broodmare Eight Carat. St Katherine also has a yearling filly by Redoute’s Choice.
David Hayes trained a Redoute’s running double on Friday with Rawnaq (Wagga) and Cross Of Gold (Geelong).
Rawnaq (2c Redoute’s Choice – Winning Belle by Zabeel) was a handsome winner over older horses on debut. His older brother Light Brigade was G1 placed behind Ilovethiscity in last year’s Royal Randwick Guineas.
It was a performance particularly appreciated by Arrowfield because Rawnaq was bred by former Arrowfield director the late Philip Esplin from G2 Queensland Guineas winner Winning Belle.
Redoute’s Choice is currently second on the Australian sires’ premiership with 126 individual winners of 181 races and $8.05 million in prizemoney.
He owns an astonishing 15% lifetime stakes winners-to-winners strike-rate and will stand for a $137,500 (inc gst) service fee at Arrowfield this year.
