Willow Grove stallion Mugharreb sired his first international winner when Black Ice won on debut in Singapore on Friday night.  The gelding’s win continued the marvellous run of Aussie expat Steven Burridge who has trained 8 winners at Kranji this month.

Burridge is expecting bigger things to come from Black Ice following his impressive two-and-a-half length victory.  “This bloke has a lot of ability but he’s still very green.  He’s got plenty of scope about him so I don’t think he’ll have any trouble getting further than 1200m.”

Black Ice (3g Mugharreb – Lady Migaloo by General Nediym) was initially registered as Ilparan and won a Cranbourne trial last May for the Brilley family who bred him from their Bendigo winner Lady Migaloo.  

“We did pay a bit of money for him after he won a trial for Mick Kent,” Burridge recalled on Friday night.  “But I think we should recoup that money.”

Mugharreb (Gone West) was raced by Sheikh Hamdan and was a Listed winner of the 3YO Hopeful Stakes (1200m) at Newmarket.  He has averaged over 75 mares in his first four books at Ralph Satchell’s Willow Grove Stud in South Australia.

Black Ice is one of 8 winners from Mugharreb’s first crop.  He was off the mark with his second crop when Harreb Lady won on debut by three lengths at Port Lincoln last month.

Mugharreb is by recently deceased sire of sires Gone West from the former champion European filly Marling.  His second dam Marwell was also rated the champion of her sex at two and three of her generation in Europe.
