Solar Great a standout for Falkirk

Kiwi sire Falkirk has produced another standout performer in Hong Kong with his son Solar Great (NZ) showing all the makings of an exciting sprinter with a big win in the G3 HKJC Macau Trophy (1400m).

Solar Great was purchased as a weanling in 2008 and his win is timely as entries for NZ Bloodstock’s 2013 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale close this Friday, March 8.

The David Hall trained gelding son of has proven unstoppable this season with Saturday’s win his fifth straight from five starts, and his performance to win the Group 3 – his first at stakes level – was first class.  “It’s always tough to win five in a row and especially in Hong Kong,” Hall said.  “Getting to this level, obviously the hurdles get higher every time so I’m pretty proud of what the horse has done.”

Champion jockey Douglas Whyte settled him back in the field after drawing wide and then used his huge turn of foot to split runners to score by a neck.

Solar Great (5g Falkirk – Harmonics by Bletchencore) is the fourth stakes winner for his sire Falkirk who stands at Windsor Park Stud.  The Tale Of The Cat stallion is no stranger to Hong Kong stakes success with the Karaka graduate Fay Fay winning the G1 Hong Kong Derby last year.

Solar Great had one winning trial in New Zealand for his trainer Martin Cleland before transferring off-shore.  He is now raced by Hui Sze Man and has won 6 of his 14 starts for over NZ$640,000 in prizemoney.

Bred and sold by Kristine Stead, Solar Great was purchased by Sir James Lodge from NZ Bloodstock’s 2008 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale for $18,000.
