Stromberg Carlson was represented by his latest winner when Sound System scored an eye catching victory in the Westspeed Nursery Hcp at Belmont on Wednesday. The Raheen Stud resident has now sired 24 winners.
Sound System (2g Stromberg Carlson – Sarani by Sanction) produced a barnstorming finish at the end of 1000 metres to win by 1.5 lengths from run Black Dane (Blackfriars) and Domerin (Oratorio).
The Quona Cooke trained youngster benefited from a debut run at Belmont last month when he was beaten a short-neck by unbeaten filly All Friared Up (Blackfriars) after pulling hard. “We’ve put a lot of time into the horse and have always liked him,” winning jockey Lucas Camilleri said. “There was quite a bit of speed up front and I was happy to let him settle down and chase the leaders.”
Cooke purchased Sound System for just $10,000 from the Raheen Stud draft at the 2009 Magic Millions QTIS 600 yearling sale. His dam Sarani also has a yearling filly and a weanling colt by Stromberg Carlson.
Stromberg Carlson is by breed-shaping sire Redoute’s Choice and is a half-brother to G1 racehorse and sire Testa Rossa. He was raced by John Messara and Alan Jones and, in a career restricted to 8 starts, won at Rosehill and was stakes placed at Doomben.
Stromberg Carlson has averaged 115 mares in his first four seasons at the Basil Nolan owned Raheen Stud which is situated in the Gladfield Valley. He will stand for a $4,400 (inc gst) fee in 2010.
