Southern Image sires first winner in US

Widden Stud shuttler Southern Image was represented by his first winner on Thursday when his filly Southern Fireball captured a 900m juvenile event at Hollywood Park.

The Doug O’Neill trained filly was the very first starter by Southern Image and she scored by four lengths in 50.6s.

Southern Fireball (2f Southern Image – Hot Moon by Carson City) was bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds in Kentucky and was a $25,000 buy at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Yearling Sale last July.

Southern Image broke his maiden at Santa Anita Park and returned at three to begin a five-race win streak that spanned two years.  Among those victories were the 2003 Malibu Stakes (G1) plus the 2004 Santa Anita Hcp (G1), Pimlico Special (G1) and Sunshine Millions Classic.  He compiled an 8-6-1-1 race-card to go along with $1.84 million in earnings.

Southern Image (Halo’s Image) shuttles from Taylor Made Stallions in Kentucky.  He is a half-brother to Japanese G3 winner Black Bar Spin (Put It Back) and comes from the same family as G1 winners Jolie’s Halo (Halo) and Yankee Victor (Saint Ballado).

He has covered books of 105 (2006), 83 (’07) and 76 (’08) at Widden and his 2009 service fee will be $9,900 (inc gst).

Widden sold the top-priced first-crop Southern Image yearling this year when his colt from Darling Dane (Danehill) made $40,000 at the Inglis Classic Sale.  He will be trained by Tim Martin.  There were 21 Southern Image lots sold at the 2009 majors for an average of $17,400.
