Punters were left reeling when Sparkling Victory belied his cricket-score odds at Morphettville on Saturday.  

Sparkling Victory (3g Reset – Umakineara by Umatilla) found plenty in a driving finish to edge out Black Storm by a half head in the Wolf Blass & Associates Hcp (2014m).

Despite the $101 quote, local trainer Joe Lockyer and his partner Elaine Robertson weren’t surprised.  Sparkling Victory ran sixth in the LR Hill Smith Stakes (1800m) before running fourth at Morphettville over 2000m.

“If you looked at his last run it wasn’t that bad,” Robertson said.  “He was always looking for a longer trip and hopefully he can go on and win a few more staying events.”

Lockyer purchased Sparkling Victory from the draft of Western Australian breeder Vicki Cayley for $14,000 at the 2009 Adelaide Magic Millions.  

Darley sire Reset has been represented by 14 stakes winners headed by G1 Magic Millions graduate Rebel Raider.  Sparkling Victory’s dam Umakineara has foaled three winners including G2 performer Marnie d’Or.
