Bianconi galloper Alcohol turned back the clock to cause an upset at Morphettville on Saturday.

The Richard Jolly trained gelding was resuming from a long, injury-enforced spell and was quoted at double-figure odds for the Tattsbet Hcp (1200m).  He settled at the tail of the field in company with stablemate Mr Good Cat before surprising punters with a winning sprint in the straight.

Alcohol (7g Bianconi – Tendue by General Nediym) was having just his third start since January 2013.  “He’s a talented horse,” Jolly said.  ““I said not to underestimate him earlier this week.”

Consigned to the 2010 Adelaide Magic Millions by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, he was a bargain buy at $25,000 for Jolly and a syndicate that includes several employees of Penfolds Wines.  He paid that straight back winning a Moonee Valley maiden that was worth $100,000 in prizemoney and a Super VOBIS bonus.

“He strained a tendon so we sent him up to Clover Glen to recover,” Jolly recalled.  “I inspected him earlier this year and decided to keep him there instead of racing on rough, rain-affected tracks during winter.”

Bianconi (Danzig) is currently covering his first book at Ridgeview Park in Muskerry East.  He got the Adelaide winner from Tendue who claimed the Red Ruby Final at Ballarat for Lauriston’s O’Brien family in 2004.

Hoofnote:  Alcohol’s younger brother Alcobro bolted in at the annual Mindarie-Halidon meeting on Sunday.  The Bianconi three year-old won at the first time of asking for Jolly and jockey Jake Toeroke who also piloted Alcohol on Saturday.
