Spirited win by Alcohol

The Adelaide-trained Alcohol broke his maiden in style under lights when winning the $100,000 Styletread Handicap (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

Alcohol (3g Bianconi – Tendue by General Nediym) had a half-length to spare over Soaked (Elvstroem) and his connections collected $61,000 first prize plus a $30,000 Super VOBIS bonus.

“It’s absolutely sensational.  All the owners have really got to thank Richard Jolly and his team back in Adelaide,” part-owner Terry McEvoy told TVN.  “Richard’s had a lot of faith in the horse and tonight proved it.”

Lauriston Thoroughbreds consigned Alcohol to the 2010 Adelaide Magic Millions and he was a bargain buy at $25,000.  His dam Tendue won the 2004 Red Ruby Final at Ballarat and owners Kevin and Tanith O’Brien welcomed her latest Bianconi colt on November 19.

“He’s still a maiden and new to it, so I gave him a couple of backhanders as a reminder,” jockey Dean Yendall said after dismounting from Alcohol.  “He’s probably going to be better over further again and he did a really good job when I asked for an effort.”

Swettenham Stud stallion Bianconi brought up a winning treble at Moonee Valley after siring provincial winners Lucky Chan (Moe) and Chewing Steel (Bendigo) earlier in the day.

His Swettenham associate Keep The Faith also sired three winners on Friday with Flagges Flying (Ipswich), Consecrate (Bendigo) and Gold Bundle (Morphettville).
