Spring classics beckon Brooklyn

Eliza Park International sire Magnus has zoomed to over $4 million in progeny earnings this season…helped along by boom colt Prince of Brooklyn who captured Friday’s $100,000 Elvstroem Classic at Swan Hill.

The $60,000 first prize has enhanced Prince of Brooklyn’s kitty following his debut victory in taking out the G3 National Stakes at Morphettville a fortnight ago.

Magnus struck again on Saturday when Prince of Brooklyn’s older brother Duke Of Brunswick chimed in to win an $80,000 sprint at Moonee Valley.  He hasn’t been out of a place in the last 9 starts for trainer Mick Price.

Prince of Brooklyn (2c Magnus – Tristabeel by Zabeel) is rapidly shaping as one of Magnus’ best juveniles.  “I never touched the bottom,” jockey Dale Smith said at Swan Hill.  “He put himself in the lead and then really kicked into another gear to put it away.”

Price confirmed the untapped colt will be spelled and set for spring campaign centred around the G1 Caulfield Guineas.  His dam Tristabeel retired a maiden but remained with trainer Rick Hore-Lacy and part-owner Chris Marks repaying their faith at stud with 6 winners from 6 to race.  Marks has retained her rising two year-old filly by Magnus.

Anthony Cummings weighed in with a Magnus maiden winner on Saturday when lightly-raced Northern Storm broke through at Kembla Grange.  A homebred for Dorrington Farm owner Rob Crabtree, he is a younger half-brother to Set For Fame who won a G2 Armanasco Stakes and was runner-up to Rock Classic in the 2010 G1 Australian Guineas.

Crabtree has another winner on the horizon from their dam Northpoint (Dehere).  Her two year-old Magnus gelding Viceroy is with Tony McEvoy and he shaped nicely on debut at Ballarat last Sunday.

Magnus won a Group 1 for Crabtree in the AJC Galaxy (1100m) and he is currently sitting fourth on the Victorian premiership.   Fellow Eliza Park International sire Bel Esprit ($4.76m) leads the table ahead of Reset ($4.68m), Written Tycoon ($4.46m) and Magnus ($4.13m).

Northern Storm was his 80th individual winner in Australia this season and they have won 136 races.  Eliza Park International will stand Magnus for a $17,600 (inc gst) service fee this season.
