Stratum filly tops Day 1 at Magic Millions National Sale

A Stratum half sister to champion New Zealand filly Anabandana topped Day 1 of the Magic Millions National weanling sale on Wednesday.

Consigned by Reavill Farm, the filly foal was purchased by New Zealand’s Whakanui Stud for $220,000.  “She’s a beautiful filly,” Whakanui’s Tim Bodle said at the Gold Coast.  “She had the looks as well as a great pedigree.  We will retain her to race and then she will join our broodmare band.”

The Stratum filly was boosted in the lead up to the National Sale when her two-year-old half sister Anabandana won the G1 Diamond Stakes at Ellerslie and G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes at Manawatu.  As well as Anabandana, her dam Great Notice has foaled the stakes winning juvenile Gybe and three other winners.

Magic Millions graduate and Golden Slipper winner Stratum stands at Widden Stud.  He was last season’s champion first season sire.

Day 1 grossed $3.27 million on 146 weanlings at an average of over $22,400.  The clearance rate of 69% will rise with post auction sales overnight and tomorrow.

Commands, Duke of Marmalade, Fastnet Rock and High Chaparral were other stallions to be represented by six figure foals during Day 1.

Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said the figures were in line with other auctions held in the region in the past six months.  “Most vendors met the market on a tough day and those who supported the sale with quality individuals were rewarded,” Cox said.

“It is a tough market at the moment and there are a number of factors in play including the high Australian dollar which is keeping down the numbers of international visitors.”

Day 2 of the weanling auction will be held from 10am (Qld time) on Wednesday.
