Strawberry Baby took no prisoners while posting her second stakes win on Saturday for Victorian shuttler Warrior’s Reward (USA).
The free-wheeling filly broke well and never looked back in the Big Easy Stakes (1100m) at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. She laid down a 46.09s fraction for the first 800m and then lengthened in the straight to score an authoritative victory.
“She has speed so I just let her run,” jockey Colby Hernandez said. “She never gave up and just kept fighting on.”
Strawberry Baby is in the record books as part of an historic hat-trick for Warrior’s Reward on Friday May 30, 2014. It was a milestone date for the Spendthrift Farm shuttler who is a Group 1 winning son of Medaglia d’Oro.
His first three winners as a sire – Liatris (Pimlico), Unbridled Reward (Churchill Downs) and Strawberry Baby (Lone Star Park) – all saluted on that same day.
Strawberry Baby (4f Warrior’s Reward – Kendall Hill by Theatrical) has now won 5 times in 9 starts and that includes an initial black-type victory in the Prairie Gold Lassie Stakes. She is owned Brad & Judy Miller and is out of an unraced half-sister to multiple stakes winner Denim Yenem.
Brandywine Farm’s Jim and Pam Robinson bred Strawberry Baby and the Kentucky couple are long-time supporters of Spendthrift. They have booked in close to 100 mares to their stallions this year.
Spendthrift’s incentive programs are a no-brainer according to Pam Robinson. “Share the Upside makes sense,” she said. “You share upfront supporting the horse and if he’s a hit, you get to share that success.”
Group 1 winner Into Mischief is the pin-up stallion for ‘Share the Upside’. Priced at $12,500 first-up, his lifetime breeding rights now are trading in the neighbourhood of $200,000.
