Made In Russia might be the start of a new era for China Horse Club in Singapore.

Hall Of Fame trainer Lee Freedman made that observation after the Street Cry gelding stitched up a restricted sprint at Kranji on Friday. “This horse showed us quite a lot in his work and was very impressive tonight. He’s lightly-raced and there’s more to come. The only element of risk is that he’s a handful at the gates.”

Made In Russia was difficult to load but, once on his way, camped on the pace and bounded away to score by three lengths. He was a $225,000 buy for DGR agent Duncan Ramage (FBAA) from Vinery at the 2016 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Initially with Tony McEvoy, he had won twice in Adelaide before transferring to Singapore. “He’s quite raw and does a few things wrong,” jockey Craig Gryllis told connections. “He was fractious in the barriers but travelled nice and easy. I let him stride along and he’s quite an exciting horse.”

China Horse Club’s best win to date at Kranji was with Singapore Gold Cup star Tropaios (Excellent Art). He was trained by Freedman’s younger brother Michael.

Made In Russia is a younger half-brother to Millie the Missile (Smart Missile) who won at Yarra Valley and Kilmore last season. Their dam Millie Milou (Zabeel) has foaled fillies by Myboycharlie and Pluck (USA) in the last two years for Vinery partner Greg Perry.

DGR graduate Glitra (NZ) ensured his syndicate of lady owners enjoyed a memorable month in August. The Stravinsky gelding won the Coffs Harbour Cup and Kelly Lawyers Hcp at Doomben.

Glitra has been revelation since relocating to Brisbane. “He’s been a great addition to the stable,” trainer Peter Hulbert said. “And it’s great for the connections – there’s four generations of the one family in his ownership.”

He’s from a half-sister to Group 1 Champion The Jewel (O’Reilly) and cost $70,000 at the 2014 NZB Karaka Sale from Phoenix Park.

Ramage had purchased his older half-brother by Thorn Park from Phoenix Park at the 2013 Karaka Sale. Named Sun Bing by China Horse Club, he was beaten by Wandjina in a jump-out at Randwick and then won a Hawkesbury barrier trial but went amiss and didn’t race.
