Street Cry gallopers Whobegotyou and Shocking were perfect support acts for the Black Caviar Show at Flemington on Super Saturday.
In any other year, the Mark Kavangh trained geldings would have starred after completing the G2 Blamey Stakes – G1 Australian Cup double.
Kavanagh mirrored the crowd’s excitement after Black Caviar’s record-breaking Newmarket victory when he was literally jumping for joy after the Australian Cup.
“Shocking grows a leg at Flemington,” Kavanagh said about his Melbourne Cup winner. “He was going alright half-way through the race and, when the front ones started to cave in, I thought he would win.”
Shocking (5h Street Cry – Maria Di Castiglia by Danehill) was a $64,000 buy for Laurence Eales at the 2007 Magic Millions 2YO HIT Sale and Saturday’s prizemoney lifted his earnings to $4.98 million. He could butter up in the Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill next Saturday.
His dam was bred in England and retired a maiden after just three starts. She foaled minor winners by King of Kings, End Sweep, Xaar and Lujain before visiting Street Cry.
Her current yearling by Street Cry’s history-making son Street Sense will be offered at the upcoming Inglis Easter yearling sale as Lot 341.
Whobegotyou took his earnings past to $3.11 million in the G2 Blamey Stakes earlier in the day. Ridden cold by Damien Oliver, he arrived in time to defeat Dao Dao (Shinko Forest) by a head.
“He made hard work of it but he’s a remarkable horse and has performed at the absolute top level since his three-year-old days,” Kavanagh said. “We’ve looked after him with only a few starts every prep. It’s pretty good fun.”
Whobegotyou (5g Street Cry – Temple Of Peace by Carnegie) had been runner-up to More Joyous in the G1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield last month and he will be given a chance for revenge in the G1 Doncaster Mile at Randwick in April.
Whobegotyou was a $19,500 buy for Eales at the 2007 Inglis Classic yearling sale. His family’s off-shore relations include the stakes winners Rajsaman, Rosawa, Rosanara, Cuddles, Katz Me If You Can, Cause To Believe, Buffythecenterfold and Tap To The Music.
Darley stallion Street Cry is the sire of USA Horse of The Year Zenyatta and she heads his tally of 12 Group 1 winners among 44 stakes winners globally.
Street Cry covered the likes of G1 winners Miss Finland, Elegant Fashion, Mnemosyne, Black Mamba, Love To Dance, Piavonic, Private Steer and Rewaaya during his last southern hemisphere breeding season.
Australian Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy has already been booked in to him for the upcoming breeding season.
