Sunspeed breeders ready to Salute

Bob & Sandra Peters completed an interstate stakes double for Not A Single Doubt in the Listed J C Roberts Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

Their homebred Final Salute followed Single Bullet’s G3 Todman Stakes victory earlier in the day at Rosehill.  Single Bullet levelled with up Ducimus in the final 300 metres and responded generously to prevail by a short neck.

Ducimus (Snitzel) was bred in WA by Oakland Park Stud and offered by Blue Gum Farm at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale where he topped the leader-board at $700,000.  He had won the LR Talindert Stakes at Flemington in February for a syndicate that includes Oakland Park’s Neville and Sue Duncan.

Ducimus will give the Duncans an undeniable chance to land the G1 Golden Slipper next Saturday.

Meanwhile, Final Salute is the new $4.25 TAB favourite for the G2 WA Derby (2400m) on April 8 following a resolute victory in the Roberts Stakes.  He dug deep to defeat Kingston Thoroughbreds homebred Gatting by half a length.

Final Salute will follow the traditional classic trail in the Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m) on March 25.  “He was closer than anticipated and I got caught chasing the speed,” jockey Willie Pike said.  “But he toughed it right out to the finish.”

Final Salute is from Listed NZ Great Northern Guineas Prelude winner Sophia Babe (Iglesia).  He had won a Northam maiden in October and then finished fourth in the G2 WA Guineas.

Peters has won 5 of the last 6 editions of the WA Derby with Arcadia Dream, Delicacy, Respondent, Mystic Prince and Dreamaway.
