Host (Chi) gelding Super Kenny came back from the dead to win an Open Benchmark Sprint at Kranji on Sunday.
Super Kenny’s days appeared to be numbered after severely injuring his off-hind leg in the G3 Singapore 3YO Challenge (1200m) in March. The tendons and ligaments were so badly damaged, veterinary surgeons advised connections to put him down.
“It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” an emotional trainer Pat Shaw said. “He’s such a good horse, we decided to take the gamble to try and save him.
“The good thing is he’s such a lovely relaxed type of horse and that helped the recovery. I haven’t looked too far ahead with him – I’m just happy he’s come back to racing and the win is a bonus.”
Super Kenny (4g Host – Mysterious Ransom by Red Ransom) was posted three-wide behind the leaders at his first start for six months. Despite covering extra ground, he launched a strong challenge in the straight to win by over a length from USA bred sprinter Flash Gift (Lawyer Ron). He carved out the 1000 metres in 58.74s.
“It’s amazing how quickly he’s recovered from that injury,” winning jockey Barend Vorster said. “He’s such a class horse and I think he’s come back stronger as an individual.”
Super Kenny is by Swettenham Stud sire Host (Chi) and was a $30,000 buy at the 2011 Gold Coast Magic Millions for Tmen Stable owners Mark and Emily Yong. He is from an unraced half-sister to LR Hobart Guineas winner Deloraine (More Than Ready).
Host (Hussonet) is standing for a $9,900 (inc gst) service fee at Swettenham Stud this year. For further information, broodmare owners should contact Adam Sangster (0418 543 633) or Chris Belli (0417 514 552).
