Swettenham Stud dominated the LR Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Sunday with top-class filly Sweet Sherry holding out the brilliant finish of Kinetic Design.

Sweet Sherry (Bel Esprit) was a $260,000 buy from Swettenham’s draft at this year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.  “She’s built like a colt and I said from Day 1 that she’s a cracking horse,” trainer Brett Stanley said.  “She’s ticked another box today and has shown us she’s got the ability to go to higher places.

“She was always within herself has just got natural ability with plenty of improvement ahead.”

Swettenham has catalogued a half-brother to Sweet Sherry for the 2016 Inglis Melbourne Premier.  The colt is by Dash For Cash and he’s also a full-brother to Group 2 winning mare Arinoso.

Swettenham owner Adam Sangster was thrilled with the brilliant debut run by Kinetic Design.  The daughter of Swettenham freshman Master Of Design came from last to clock the best sectionals once the field linked up with the course-proper.

“Black-type with his first runner – that doesn’t surprise me,” Sangster said at Flemington.  “Master Of Design has got a better pedigree and a better race record than all the other young sons of Redoute’s Choice.”

Kinetic Design cost $200,000 and is part-owned by Rob, Barbara and Paul McClure.  “Rob wanted to buy the best Master Of Design at the Inglis Premier and she was recommended by James Bester,” Sangster added.  “The feedback from trainers tells us there’s more like this filly out there and they’ve got plenty of zip.”

The McClures are shareholders in Master of Design who won the G1 T J Smith in a time only bettered by Black Caviar.  He stands for a $15,000 service fee at Swettenham.
