Tactical triumph for Jaminzah

Master Of Design miler Jaminzah upstaged his stabelmate Veladaro for a first-up victory in the Midori Hcp (1400m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday.

The Chris Waller-trained duo engaged in a race of tactics with jockey Jeff Lloyd coming out on top against fellow South African veteran Robbie Fradd. “I was following Robbie waiting for him to make a move before I did,” Lloyd said. “I could see he was pretty confident half way up the straight but I was, too.

Waller’s Queensland manager Paul Shailer said just about every jockey who rode Jaminzah suggested he would be best at 2000m or further. “But experience has shown us 1600m is as far as he wants to go. He’s never won first up but was coming off a trial at the Gold Coast on Tuesday which topped him off nicely.

“He was ready and fit for today and has run out of his skin.”

Jaminzah (5g Master Of Design – Sarchi Lodge by Grand Lodge) was having his first run since December and stormed home from last on the corner to improve his career stats to 8 wins in 29 starts for earnings of $388,910. That includes four wins at Flemington last season as well as a victory at Warwick Farm. He was bred in Victoria by Ian & Vicki Bell from a half-sister to G3 MVRC Tesio Stakes winner Joy Of Life

Master Of Design (Redoute’s Choice) stands at Greta West Stud and is also in the running for the $500,000 Country Championship Final at Randwick in April after his mare Bennelong Dancer qualified in Heart 3 at Albury on Saturday.

Greta West doubled up with black-type at Caulfield on Saturday. King Of Prussia’s 3yo colt Yulong January ramped up his G1 Australian Guineas campaign with an encouraging first-up third in the LR Zeditave Stakes

And Greta West-bred 2yo colt Free Of Debt (Unencumbered) finished third in the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes. He was the first colt home when beaten less than a length by Lyre and Lankan Star.

Greta West Stud has four yearlings for sale through Bucklee Farm at the Inglis Melbourne Premier starting on Sunday. There are colts by Toronado (Lot 525) & Magic Albert (Lot 610) and fillies by Fighting Sun (Lot 632) & Magnus (Lot 782).
