All-conquering mare Goldikova strolled to a three length victory in the Prix Rothschild at Deauville on Sunday to join the legendary Miesque on 10 Group 1 victories. The Anabaa mare is trained by Freddie Head who was Miesque’s jockey during her memorable winning streak in the 1980s.
Goldikova (5m Anabaa – Born Gold by Blushing Groom) settled in the slipstream of her stablemate Only Green (Green Desert) and G1 Falmouth Stakes winner Music Show (Noverre) at Deauville. She was in cruise control until Oliver Peslier released the reins and the result was put to rest instantly.
The Irish bred mare made it a hat-trick of Prix Rothschild wins and she is a 6-4 favourite to record a historic third Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs on November 6. “She is a fantastic filly and I have said that many times, but it is the plain truth,” Head said. “It looks like nothing can stop her, and it’s obvious she enjoys Deauville.”
Goldikova’s initial Group 1 came in the 2008 Rothschild before she added the Prix du Moulin and Breeders’ Cup Mile to her resume that year.
She returned in 2009 to win the G1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket and then defended her Rothschild crown before a six-length rout in the Prix Jacques le Marois. She also doubled up in the Breeders’ Cup Mile which was run at Santa Anita last year.
Goldikova is now three-for-three in 2010. She broke the course record in the Prix d’Ispahan at Longchamp and then travelled to Royal Ascot to defeat the fast-finishing Paco Boy in the Queen Anne Stakes. The third Rothschild trophy advanced her record to 18: 13-2-2 with approximately US$4.70 million in earnings.
“I don’t think there is a lot of improvement to come,” Head explained. “She is at the top of her game at the moment.”
Goldikova is by former Widden shuttler Anabaa from the winning Blushing Groom mare Born Gold who is a sister to Group 1 mare Gold Splash. Second dam Riviere d’Or (Lyphard) was a Group 1 winner and her third dam Gold River (Riverman) captured the 1981 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Goldikova will attempt to beat Miesque’s Group 1 record in the Jacques le Marois at Deauville on August 15. The plan is to then run her in the G1 Prix de la Foret on October 3 before heading to Churchill Downs for the Breeders’ Cup Mile in November.
