The Nun delivers for Dawson Stud

The Nun looked a professional filly on debut at Ascot last Wednesday when all the pieces fell into place during a one-length victory in the Reliable Asset Maintenance Maiden (1000m).

The Dawson Stud-bred graduate travelled beautifully in the box-seat some three lengths behind front-runner Bubbles In Rio (I’m All The Talk) and then gave in-form jockey Shaun O’Donnell a trouble-free ride to the line unlike even-money favourite Dust Aside (Safeguard).

Take nothing away from The Nun but stewards did report Dust Aside had difficulty obtaining clear running from on straightening until angling inwards approaching 100m.

O’Donnell brought The Nun back to scale with a positive report for trainer Justine Erkelens and managing part-owner Greg Browne.  “I like this filly and I think she’s got a future.  She coasted to win her barrier trial at Belmont last month and we had a lovely run with cover today.

“She’s learning all the time and I came to the races anticipating she would go well first-up from the good draw.  There was speed up front and when I gave her a couple in the straight she let down nicely.”

Dawson Stud’s Graham Daws bred her using former Coolmore Stud shuttler Churchill (Galileo) over Anamour (Anabaa) whose earlier WA winners include Extreme Love (Xtravagant) and Outback Jack (Outreaach).

The 20 year-old mare has unraced Playing God 2yo Playing Hearts on the books with Erkelens and Browne who are currently immersed in the latest campaign of their classic-winning mare Machine Gun Grace (Maschino).

Anamour was a $42,000 buy for Daws through Belmont Bloodstock at the 2017 Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale when she was carrying Outback Jack.  She has a Long Leaf yearling colt and was pensioned after foaling a Lightsaber colt in October.
