Ton up for Flying Spur

Flying Spur is the latest stallion to reach 100 individual winners this season.

The Arrowfield Stud sire broke the century mark when Chivvy saluted in the Race-Tech 2YO Hcp at Sandown on Wednesday.

Flying Spur first broke the ton with 100 winners in 2004 and followed up with 127 (2005), 131 (2006) and 129 in his championship season (2007).

He came up short with 90 winners in 2008, 89 (2009) and 98 (2010)

Chivvy (2f Flying Spur – Negotiate by Red Ransom) did it in style with a strong victory on debut over Joyeux (Lonhro) and Bonaria (Redoute’s Choice).

“She always had them covered in the straight,” jockey Michael Rodd said.  “I had to hold her together because I didn’t want to get to the front too soon – it’s a long way up the straight at Sandown.”

Chivvy cost Hawkes Racing $220,000 from Arrowfield Stud at the 2010 Inglis Easter yearling sale.  She is from a half-sister to Melbourne stakes winner Fleet (Dehere).  Second dam Euphoria (Marauding) was a G1 winner of the AJC Champagne Stakes.  Negotiate has a yearling filly by Snitzel and a weanling colt by Flying Spur.
