A pair of $90,000 yearlings by Blackfriars and Oratorio (Aus) topped the second-session of Perth’s Magic Millions Sale on Wednesday.
Scenic Lodge’s Blackfriars – Trish Glee colt (Lot 325) was sold to Glen Kettlewell. The dam is a Success Express winning daughter of Sydney Group winner Just Trish (Sovereign Red).
The Oratorio – Umashadow colt (Lot 329) from Queenslea Park was knocked down to local trainer David Harrison. His dam is a half sister to Group 1 winning juvenile Pride of Rancho.
“To have two horses top the market at $90,000 is a reflection of the competition today,” Harrison said. “That said, there’s some work to be done to ensure the WA industry as a whole remains relevant.”
Blackwatch Stud provided the top-priced filly when selling the Trade Fair – Crecy youngster (Lot 388) to John Chalmers for $72,500. The leading local agent went toe-to-toe with trainer Vern Brockman to purchase the youngster who is from a Warring Nations half sister to the dam of star sprinter Ellicorsam.
Day 2 trade reached $2.86 million and the average increased 9% to $23,293. The clearance rate rounded out at 75% which was on par with the 2014 figures. “It was a completely different feel today from start to finish,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox noted. “There was good competitive bidding by local owners and trainers right from the outset.”
