Mighty Lucky has landed his fourth black-type win for Vinery sire Casino Prince with a courageous victory in the G3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1615m) at Doomben.
The Gosford based gelding is nothing if not tough and he kept grinding despite being posted wide for the majority of the weight-for-age contest on Saturday. “He’s been a wonderful horse and I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet,” part-owner and trainer Fred Cowell claimed. “He loves a fight and there will be no problems coming here again next Saturday.”
Cowell said Mighty Lucky will back up in the LR Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) on June 4. “He will be sweet getting over more ground. He won the Summer Cup at Randwick over 2000 metres and ran it out strongly.”
The gelding’s previous black-type victories had been in the LR Luskin Star Stakes at Scone and LR Festival Stakes at Rosehill. His overall career stats read 41 starts for 9 wins and more than $713,000 in prizemoney.
“He’s so honest and gives everything he’s got,” jockey Chris O’Brien said after returning to scale. “He will lick the feed-bin out tonight and will come back determined to win again next Saturday.”
Mighty Lucky is the best of five winners from Buxom Babe (Octagonal) who is a half-sister to G3 AJC Breeders’ Plate winner High Rolling.
Casino Prince (Flying Sur) has sired the winners of 9 black-type events this season and he stands at Vinery for an $11,000 (inc gst) service fee.
His yearlings have sold to $260,000 so far this year and there’s another 8 catalogued for the Magic Millions National yearling sale starting on Tuesday week, June 7. Among them is the younger brother to G2 Tramway Stakes winner Hooked (Lot 1675) and Vinery’s colt from a three-quarter sister to Group 1 racehorse and sire Reset (Lot 1721).
