Turbo-charged win in Wanganui Guineas

Lord Turbo (NZ) maintained his perfect record after seeing off a strong field in the LR Wanganui Guineas (1340m) on Saturday.

Unbeaten and untapped after earlier victories at Awapuni and Hastings, Lord Turbo was settled midfield by Rosie Myers and then bounded to the lead at the furlong.  The Tony Bambry trained gelding held off Burnt Orange (Mossman) to win by a short-head.  Girl Of My Dreams (Gold Centre), a G3 winner of the Taranaki Classic in February, finished six lengths astern in third place.

Lord Turbo (3g Perfectly Ready – Sitting On A Hill by City On A Hill) is now likely to head to Hastings for the G2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas on October 5.  “He’s so laid back – when I went to get him from the stable he was lying down asleep,” Bambry said.  “He’s special, this bloke.

“We bred him and raced the mother Sitting On A Hill who was Group 3 placed.  I bought the grand-dam for $2,000 in the late 1980s – so we’ve had the breed for a while.”

The second-dam Ivy Darling (Ivory Hunter) didn’t race but her descendants are more than paying their way.  Sitting On A Hill has a Nom du Jeu yearling filly, she’s in foal to Rip Van Winkle and will be bred back to Ocean Park this year.
