New Zealand bred Brazilian Pulse is the new favourite for Thursday’s G1 VRC Crown Oaks at Flemington. The Mike Moroney trained filly heads the market after her brave victory in the G2 Wakeful Stakes on Saturday.
Brazilian Pulse (3f Captain Rio – Sharazad by Tenby) defeated Placement (Savabeel) and Heartsareforlove (Hussonet) in the traditional classic trial over 2000m. “She’s a lovely filly,” Moroney claimed. “A lot of good fillies have got quirks about them, but she’s just a lovely, quiet filly. She’s got a great nature but is very, very tough.”
Brazilian Pulse is still in her first preparation after winning on debut at Ballarat on September 1. She won again at Sandown a fortnight later and then ran placings in the G2 Edward Manfold Stakes and G1 Thousand Guineas before claiming the Wakeful.
Paul Moroney Bloodstock purchased Brazilian Pulse for $26,000 from Raffles Farm at the 2009 NZB Select Yearling Sale at Karaka. Her earnings are approaching $300K and there’s over $1 million on offer in the Oaks.
She was bred by Freddy Lee and is by Westbury Stud’s resident sire, Captain Rio – a Pivotal stallion whose 12 stakes winners include the champion New Zealand two-year-old Il Quello Veloce.
Her Sharazad, was a winner at 2200m in Ireland and traces to the family of the international G1 winners Shergar, Shalanaya, Shamdala, Shamdinan and Choc Ice.
