Western Australian owners, trainers and breeders have been busy buying and selling yearlings and foals catalogued for Inglis Sales at Riverside Stables in Sydney.
Commencing a busy month of trade at the Inglis Australian Yearling Sale on April 3, Peters Investments bought a Pierro colt ($380,000) and filly ($200,000). Of the other fillies heading west, Simon Miller and micro-syndicator My Racehorse purchased a Capitalist ($260,000), Wally Daly an All Too Hard ($250,000) and Belhus Racing a Dundeel ($110,000).
WA vendors at Australia’s No.1 yearling sale included Oakland Park with a Blue Point (Ire) colt to Ciaron Maher Racing ($600,000) while Einoncliff Park sold a So You Think (NZ) filly to Matt Laurie ($300,000).
Prices at the lower-tiered HTBA Yearlings Sale on April 23 saw Jim Taylor buy a Brave Smash colt ($52,000) and Zousain filly ($30,000). Simon Miller was in action again targeting a Churchill filly ($36,000) and Neville Parnham found a bargain-priced filly by So You Think ($15,000).
The focus turned to foals this week with Mogumber Park a first-time vendor at the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale on Monday and Tuesday.
The Bullsbrook nursery’s filly by Admire Mars (Jpn) was purchased for $60,000 by Victorian-based Quat Quatta Thoroughbreds owners Ian & Jane Mandie on Day 1. Its North Pacific filly was one of five buys for Perth owner Kim Doak at $35,000 on Day 2.
“In WA, we’re really a one-sale town and I believe we need to be part of the national programme and this is our way of doing it,” Mogumber’s Colin Brown told ANZ Bloodstock News. “We wanted to test the market even though it’s correcting this year.
“Western Australian buyers look at them wherever they’re at but there are also people on the East Coast who are wanting to sell in WA. Offering Westspeed Platinum-eligible weanlings here gives them the opportunity to do that.”
Those comments come amid Sydney reports a leading Hunter Valley stud will be sending about 20 broodmares to board permanently at studs in WA.
Mogumber’s Rommel colt and All Too Hard filly didn’t make their reserves at Riverside Stables. “Obviously, we didn’t bring them here just to take them back home,” Brown said. “But we know what we can get for them as yearlings at next year’s Perth Magic Millions.”
Kim Doak’s five foal buys were all fillies. Besides the North Pacific from Mogumber Park, he targeted daughters of Hellbent ($80,000), Dirty Work ($55,000), Zousain ($40,000) and Exceedance ($22,000).
Doak and trainer Luke Fernie purchased last month’s LR Perth Stakes winner Ripcord (Written By) for $40,000 as a foal at the 2021 Magic Millions National Foal Sale on the Gold Coast.
Fillies were also the order of the day for other WA buyers at the Inglis Foal Sale. Simon Miller paid $140,000 for a Spirit of Boom filly and $105,000 for a Fierce Impact filly. Wally Daly bid $50,000 for a Rich Enuff filly and Westbury Park’s Phil Ibbotson parted with $38,000 for a Cosmic Force filly.
Darley Victoria’s G1 Stradbroke Hcp winner Impending (Lonhro) is off to a promising start at stud and he has two fillies heading west with Two Fillies Stud owner Nino Tufilli ($50,000) and Loloma Farms owner Kevin Fowler ($14,000).
Riverside Stables will be buzzing on Thursday night with numerous broodmares expected to make seven-figures during the elite-level Chairman’s Sale. Peters Investments offers four high-quality mares including G1 Railway Stakes winner Inspirational Girl (NZ).
The Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale on Friday will be the final on-site auction of season at Riverside Stable and several WA breeders are on the grounds inspecting the more affordable 170-lot catalogue.
