Former Western Australian shuttler State City sired his first winner when Green N Goldie won over 1100m at Churchill Downs last Thursday night.
Green N Goldie (2c State City–Time to Glitter by Gilded Time) was bred in Kentucky at Constancia Farm and was a bargain US$1,200 buy for Squared Stables and Buck Pond Farm at the Fasig-Tipton Yearling Sale in February 2008.
State City stood at Alwyn Park in WA for three seasons until 2007 and he has been represented by seven first-crop runners in Perth this season. His only placegetter to date has been the Paul Jordan trained filly Enraptures who was runner-up at Ascot in February.
State City was Champion Dubai sprinter in 2003 winning the G1 Golden Shaheen and he also won the Jebel Ali Sprint in a track record 57.34s for 1000m. He was then purchased by Godolphin and dispatched to the United States where his best finish was a third in the G2 Tom Fool Hcp (G2) at Belmont Park. He retired with a 17: 6-0-3 record and over $1.3 million in earnings.
State City is a son of Mr. Prospector sire Carson City who stood alongside Storm Cat at Overbrook Farm in Lexington until his death in December 2004.
State City’s dam Wajna (Nureyev) was trained by Henry Cecil to win the Listed Silver Cup at York in 1990. She is a half-sister to Oak Tree Invitational (G1) victor Navarone (Irish River) and Lawrence Realization Stakes (G2) winner Moon Spirit (Hatchet Man).
State City was purchased by Perth Racing chairman Ted van Heemst and arrived on the same flight as a black stallion travelling under the name of Dubai Excellence.
But the real Dubai Excellence, a half-brother to the world champion Dubai Millenium, actually ended up in the Ukraine instead of Western Australia. It was later confirmed the horse that arrived in WA was Samood, an Irish-bred son of Caerleon.
State City’s second crop of Westspeed yearlings averaged $26,583 at the Perth Magic Millions earlier this year.
