Chatswood Stud sire Purrealist has another Group 1 prospect in training with Chris Waller.
His last-start Canterbury winner Devil Hawk will be set for the G1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 10.
Waller trained Devil Hawk’s older brother Hawkspur to a G1 Queensland Derby victory in 2013. “It’s hard to compare but this horse is stronger than Hawkspur at the same age,” he declared. “He’s got the ability but he’s a colt and knows it.”
Devil Hawk played up behind the gates before winning the Schweppes Plate (1250m) second time out at Canterbury and if that continues to be a problem, Waller said his days as a colt are on a knife edge.
Purrealist (Tale Of The Cat) stands at Chatswood Stud in association with Tony Santich for a $5,500 (inc gst) fee. He sired the brothers from Mollyhawk (Catbird). Second dam Exceptional Angel (Turf Ruler) was a Randwick stakes winner over 2400m.
Devil Hawk is raced by David & Lynlea Puglisi and Tony & Gianna Muollo. “I’m a retired tuna fisherman – just like Tony Santich,” Puglisi laughed. “I call myself a professional breeder and just follow the horses around.”
Waller anticipates Hawkspur will begin his spring campaign in the G2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on August 22. He was last seen in Sydney when placed in the G3 Neville Sellwood Stakes at Rosehill in March.
Besides Purrealist, Chatswood Stud is home to Reward For Effort (Exceed And Excel) who has just claimed the Victorian first-season premiership. G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Anacheeva (Anabaa) is also on the roster and his first two year-olds will race this season.
