Bullsbrook trainer Jim Taylor has produced his second summer carnival star in the space of 48 hours in Perth.
Taylor’s unbeaten sprinter Barakey won first-up at Belmont on Saturday and new recruit Waratah’s Secret worked well within himself in a barrier trial at Lark Hill on Monday morning.
Waratah’s Secret (6g Oratorio – Blissfully by Zabeel) finished third to high-profile gallopers Power Princess and Playing God in a 950 metre hit-out. He was beaten a length clocking 55.12s.
Waratah’s Secret joined Taylor’s team after a winning 9 races and over $650,000 for previous trainer David Harrison. Among the highlights were the last two editions of the Prince of Wales Stakes at Ascot.
Taylor will keep Barakey and Waratah’s Secret apart until the G1 Winterbottom Stakes on November 24. Barakey will start in the Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) on November 6 while Waratah’s Secret will attempt to win a third Prince of Wales on October 27.
“Waratah’s Secret was held back by a lung infection but has been working well,” Taylor said. “All going well, he will resume in the Prince Of Wales and then head towards the Winterbottom.”
A $43,000 buy from Mungrup Stud at the 2008 Perth Magic Millions, Waratah’s Secret has been a flag-bearer for Oratorio (Aus) since winning on debut at Belmont in August 2009.
Oratorio (Stravinsky) has sired 81 winners of 202 races and Mungrup stands him for a $22,000 (inc gst) service fee.
