Winning combination at Clifford Park

Coolmore shuttler Oratorio (Ire) sired Manawanui to a Group 1 victory in the Gold Rose on Saturday and he doubled up with a game-breaker at Toowoomba on Saturday night.

His gelding Somnambulist made it two-from-two at Clifford Park for trainer Pat Sexton and jockey Luke Cumberland.

Cumberland arrived in Toowoomba from Wyong four months ago looking for a fresh start.  He promised to make the move permanent on the condition the winners also arrived at Clifford Park.

The combination with Somnambulist came about by pure coincidence.

Somnambulist (4g Oratorio – Sleeplessinseattle by End Sweep) was originally trained by Steve Farley at Wyong and Luke had ridden him to a trial win at Gosford back in August 2010.

“They both came up here around the same time,” Sexton explained.  “Luke was riding another horse at the track one morning and did a double take when he saw Somnambulist.

“Luke had nicknamed him ‘Nugget’ down there and recognised him straightaway,” Sexton recalled.  “Things have been looking good since they teamed up again.

“Hopefully, the wins keep coming and there’s a Class 2 over 1600 metres that should suit Somnambulist in a fortnight.”

Luke’s wife Kristy is still living at their home on the NSW Central Coast and the couple will make the decision about a long-term move in the coming weeks.
