Classy sprinters Stagnite and Lenience helped Danehill Express dominate the Sunspeed 3YO sires’ title in 2013-14 and the duo have signalled they will be a potent pair again this season.
Stagnite led home a Danehill Express quinella when he overhauled Lenience in the TAB Touch Home Of Betting Hcp (1300m) at Belmont on Saturday.
“He’s a laid-back character,” managing part-owner Neil Pinner said. “He has only been beaten once and had excuses that day.”
Stagnite (4g Danehill Express – Ladies Dancing by Zabeel) won the LR South-West Breeders Classic at Bunbury in March and made it 5 wins in 6 starts on Saturday. “He pushed out of a pocket against a pretty handy field,” Pinner explained. “We added winkers today and that really switched him on.”
Lenience was the leading earner for Danehill Express with $258,380 last season. He was runner-up in the Magic Millions 3YO Trophy and signed off with a Belmont victory on July 19.
Lark Hill trainer Sharon Miller prepares Stagnite for a syndicate that includes Pinner and Tony Buhagiar. The same team also raced Group 1 winning mare Ellicorsam (Fimiston) and last year’s LR South-West Breeders Classic winner Takanori (Vital Equine).
Stagnite was bred by Keith Biggs and sold for $50,000 at the 2012 Perth Magic Millions through Alwyn Park. Biggs raced his dam to wins at Ballarat (2), Cranbourne and Belmont Park.
Ladies Dancing is a sister to Lords A Leaping who was a Group 1 runner-up in the 2005 Queensland Derby. He retired to stand at Cromartry Park Stud in Gingin.
Mungrup Stud will stand Danehill Express for a $5,500 (inc gst) service fee this year.
