Mungrup Stud shuttler Dick Turpin (Ire) sired his first winner when Receding Waves scored a game victory at Redcar on Saturday.

The Richard Hannon jnr trained colt was headed in the straight but knuckled down to defeat Donjuan Triumphant (Dream Ahead) in the Market Cross Jewellers Stakes (1200m).

Receding Waves (2c Dick Turpin – Welanga by Dansili) went out second-favourite after a fading third on debut at Bath last month.  He looked every bit the professional second-up to prevail by a head under a driving ride by Sean Levey.

Hannon’s father Richard Hannon snr trained Dick Turpin and they purchased Receding Waves for 22,000gns (AUD 42,075) at the 2014 Tattersalls October yearling sale.  His dam is a half-sister to LR Atalanta Stakes winner Out Of Reach (Warning).

The Hannons have several two year-olds by Dick Turpin and they paid 140,000 euros (AUD 197,560) for another one of his colts at the Arqana 2YO Sale at Saint-Cloud in May.

Hannon snr prepared Dick Turpin during a dazzling career highlighted by a four-length victory in the G1 Prix Jean Prat (1600m) at Chantilly.  He was also runner-up at Group 1 level to Makfi (English 2000 Guineas), Lope de Vega (French 2000 Guineas) and Canford Cliffs (St James Palace Stakes).

“Dick Turpin’s great turn of foot served him so well,” Hannon recalled.  “He was a genuine racehorse.”

Mungrup Stud sold Dick Turpin’s first southern yearlings to $105,000 at the 2015 Perth Magic Millions.  Leading owner paid Frank Fiore paid top price for the colt out of a sister to stakes winners Hot Shot Brother and Cool Business.  Other Perth buyers to open their cheque books for a Dick Turpin included Joe Byrne ($90,000), Vern Brockman ($80,000) and John Chalmers ($70,000).

Dick Turpin will stand at Mungrup Stud for an unchanged fee of $8,800 (inc gst) in 2015.
