Without Reg went back-to-back at Belmont on Wednesday and his connections had Jordie Turner to thank for a cool ride along the cutaway in the Youlden’s Milk Bar Hcp (1400m).
In a slowly run race, the Rhys Radford-trained gelding was tucked up in traffic with nowhere to go coming to the corner. “They were building three and four wide so we stayed close to the rail and he toughed it out,” Turner said. “He’s a trier and relaxed in running to get the 1400m.”
Saving ground enabled Without Reg to get up and win by a nose from the favourite Sesswa (Sessions). He had won first-up at Northam earlier this month and has now earned over $131,000 with Westspeed Platinum Bonuses of $53,000.
“I thought he had won but wasn’t so sure after watching the replay,” Radford said. “He didn’t win last prep and appreciated a break earlier this year. He’s ticking all the boxes this time in and hopefully he can keep improving.”
Without Reg (4g War Chant – Movie Queen by Bletchley Park) was a $29,000 buy from Yarradale Stud at the 2020 Perth Magic Millions and he owes Radford big-time after decking the Group 1-winning trainer at trackwork.
Radford was in neck-brace with a broken vertebrae which he put down to ‘Without Reg going without Rhys’.
He was bred by Yarradale manager Bernie Hamill and is the penultimate foal of Movie Queen who also threw War Chant’s five-time provincial winner Ladies Of London and Belmont winner The Great Hoya (Patronize).
Movie Queen’s second-dam Miss Schacci (Rory’s Jester) is a three-quarter sister to Obadele who was a Listed winner of the 2000 Merson-Cooper Stakes at Sandown
The War Chant – Bletchley Park cross is also responsible for millionaire mare Dainty Tess who was a Group 3 winner in Perth and Adelaide for trainer Dan Morton. She was bred by Queenslea Park’s Allan Morton while her dam Classic Smile (Bletchley Park) was on lease from Yarradale Stud.
Dainty Tess was bought back into the fold when Yarradale paid $300,000 for her at the 2019 Magic Millions National Sale on the Gold Coast. She foaled a Pierro colt last August and was bred back to So You Think (NZ).
Yarradale stands War Chant (Danzig) for $8,250 alongside Gingerbread Man (Shamardal) at $5,500. Both fees (inc GST).
