Woodbine ready to raise the bar

Gai Waterhouse expected a bold run first-up from Woodbine on Saturday and that forecast was right on the mark at Randwick.

Woodbine (3c Hussonet – Miss Finland by Redoute’s Choice) obliged by winning his second race from three starts in class record time.  He clocked 69.18s winning the 2014 ATC Membership Hcp (1200m) by a neck from Dream Forward (Charge Forward).

A son of champion filly Miss Finland, Woodbine had won a Hawkesbury maiden in August before going out for a spell.  “He has a lot of ability and will hopefully go all the way,” Waterhouse said.  “He really attacked the line today and we will raise the bar after one more benchmark run.”

Woodbine cost $750,000 s a yearling at the 2012 Inglis Easter Sale.  “We always thought he was an exceptional type,” Waterhouse recalled.  “He’s a beautiful colt but is still maturing.”

Five-time Group 1 winner Miss Finland is also the dam of 2YO and yearling fillies by Street Cry and a More Than Ready colt born last spring.  She is back in foal to Animal Kingdom.

It’s proving to be a good season for the Hussonet – Redoute’s Choice cross which has also produced the stakes winners Moonlight Hussler and Karacatis since August 1.

And it was an excellent day for Arrowfield Stud Inglis Sale graduates at Randwick.  The David Vandyke-trained mare Breakfast in Bed (Hussonet) and Woodbine’s stablemate Almighty Charge (Charge Forward) completed a treble for the leading Hunter Valley nursery.

Arrowfield has 16 yearlings entered for the Inglis Classic Summer Sale on Sunday and Monday led by resident sires Not a Single Doubt (4 lots), Snitzel (3), Charge Forward (2) and All American (2).
