Zabeel stakes winner retires to Highview Stud

The opportunity to stand Zabeel’s stakes-winning son Sufficient was too good to refuse for NZ studmaster Brent Gillovic.

Sufficient (Zabeel – Fleur De Chine) will become the newest addition to the Highview Stud stallion roster for the 2010 season, standing alongside proven stallions Danroad, Align and Kashani.

Sufficient is one of only three male stakes winning two year olds ever sired by Zabeel.  He’s in distinguished company because the others are none other than the Hong Kong champion Vengeance Of Rain and Australian superstar Octagonal.”

“Sufficient was a top-class galloper and his pedigree is outstanding,” Gillovic added.  “He is a lovely horse who is going to let down nicely before the stud season.

Sufficient is out of the Group 2 winning mare Fleur De Chine – dam of the G1 SAJC Australasian Oaks winner Tully Thunder.  This is also the family of US G1 winner Black Mamba and G1 AJC Australian Derby winner Roman Emperor.

Sufficient’s trainer Bruce Wallace was in awe of the horse’s racing ability throughout his career which unfortunately was interrupted by injury.  “We never saw the best of Sufficient through a combination of factors,” Wallace said.  “But there is no doubt in my mind that Sufficient is among the best horses I have trained.

“In terms of natural ability he is right alongside my Group 1 winners Darazari, Star Dancer, Prince Of Praise and Lord Revenir.”

Even before Sufficient commenced his racing career Wallace knew that he had a potential star in the making.  “From the first time he galloped at the training track as a two-year-old I knew he was something special.  He showed a great turn of foot and won his first trial very comfortably.”

Wallace sent Sufficient straight into a stakes race at only his second start and the colt didn’t let him down by winning the Listed ARC Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie in scintillating fashion.  “He treated his rivals with contempt and showed what a serious racehorse he was,” Wallace said.

Sufficient was taken to Sydney but he pulled up sore after the Gloaming Stakes and was found to have a spur on the off-fore knee.  He returned home and scored a stunning first-up victory over a mile at Ellerslie.

That win catapulted him into favouritism for the New Zealand Derby but a tendon injury derailed his classic campaign and eventually his racing career.

Sufficient will stand at a fee of $4,000 (+ gst).  Highview Stud has also announced the 2010 service fees for its other three resident stallions.  Danroad is priced at $8,000, Align at $7,000 and Kashani at $3,000.
