Zenyatta retired

Zenyatta has been retired from racing.  The Street Cry mare will be sent from her home base in California to Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky in December.  Owners Jerry and Ann Moss are still weighing up breeding plans for all-conquering champion.

Zenyatta (6m Street Cry – Vertigineux by Kris S.) won 19 of her 20 starts with the only loss coming in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic when she was beaten a head by Blame at Churchill Downs.  She retires as North America’s leading mare with earnings of $7.30 million.

Zenyatta claimed 13 Group 1 events including the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic and the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic.  She earned Eclipse Awards as Champion Older Female in 2008 and 2009 and finished second in the North American Horse of the Year awards in both years.

The 2010 Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year will come down to a two horse race between Zenyatta and Blame.

Eric Kronfeld’s Maverick Productions bred Zenyatta.  Her dam Vertigineux has a yearling filly named Eblouissant (Bernardini and a weanling filly by Henrythenavigator.
