Mount Barker breeders Norm and Jeannine Burren notched another autumn win when the Gary Portelli-trained 3yo filly Miss Backchat made short work of her opposition at Goulburn on Friday.
The Burrens own Clare Downs Stud in the Great Southern and their locally-bred gelding Makin Prophets had prevailed in the Gannons Hcp (1500m) at Albany in April.
Miss Backchat (I’m All The Talk) won a Canberra maiden on debut in December and resumed for another convincing victory in the Pat Murphy Racing Hcp (1000m). She sat outside the leader Helluva Teen (Hellbent) who was coming off a hat-trick for local trainer Neil Osbourne to score running away under apprentice Coriah Keatings.
Clare Downs received $36,000 for Miss Backchat from Portelli and Elite Thoroughbreds at the 2023 Perth Magic Millions. Portelli had prepared I’m All The Talk and was sold on her in the Swan Valley.
“She presented as a well put-together filly,” Norm said. “She wasn’t as tall as some would have liked but that didn’t bother Gary. He saw her for the first time behind the parade ring and liked her straight away.”
So did Kelly Barber when it came time to educating the well-bodied filly in the Hunter Valley. “She just had that certain kind of energy that made her shine when breaking her in,” Barber said. “She stood out from the rest.”
Miss Backchat is from the penultimate crop of I’m All The Talk and this year’s G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) winner Talkanco is from his final book at Darling View Thoroughbreds. Her dam Jester Ferrari (Testa Rossa) was a $14,000 buy for Clare Downs at the 2020 Mungrup Stud Dispersal Sale and her latest foal is a yearling colt by Awesome Rock.
Makin Prophets (Starspangledbanner) had won at Pinjarra and Kalgoorlie for Luke Fernie prior to being purchased by Alan Smith out of an Inglis Online Sale earlier this season. A big, athletic type, he has benefited from a change of scenery but had to scrubbed along to keep in touch at Albany before working home down the outside fence for Tash Faithfull.
His dam Black Prophet (Fusaichi Pegasus) is bred in the purple as a half-sister to G1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) winner Divine Prophet (Choisir) and Group 1 sire Proisir (Choisir).
