Life’s a beach for Desert Waves

Desert Waves relinquished the lead after jumping to the front in the Keith Jeffreys Memorial Trophy (1400m) at Pinjarra on Sunday and that breather allowed him to respond in the straight to win running away from fast-closer Apparatus (Trapeze Artist).

The $2.30 favourite was given every chance behind the early speed tactics of Schuhbeck (Snitzel) and Caporetto (Rommel) who took over at the half-mile.  Desert Waves is now on a hat-trick after a Bunbury maiden win on February 12 for trainer Summer Dickson and Cape Falls Thoroughbreds owner-breeder Brett Fogarty.

The rising 5yo was having just his fifth start for Wilyabrup-based Fogarty.  He was initially trained by Dion Luciani but was sidelined for 16 months after finishing fourth to Rommel’s Goddess in a Northam maiden as a spring 3yo.

Cape Falls Thoroughbreds won the LR Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic (1400m) with the Luciani-trained Hot And High (Too Darn Hot) in November and its homebred Hoba West (Epaulette) found a new lease on life after transferring to Dickson in September.  Hoba West started that spring and summer campaign with a double at Northam and he doubled up again at Ascot on Gold Rush Day before a career-high second to Apulia (Fiorente) in the G2 Ted van Heemst Stakes (2100m).

Dickson’s beach environment at her Port Kennedy stables has also helped Desert Waves recover.  “Hoba West thinks it’s a holiday here and Desert Waves just keeps getting better and better,” Dickson said at Pinjarra.  “It was a gun ride by Austin and the step up in distance was no problem.  Thanks to the A Team at home and to Cape Falls Thoroughbreds.  We love the opportunities we get with their horses.”

Desert Waves is by Coolmore Stud sire Pride Of Dubai (Street) whose WA black-type winners include She’s Fit (G3 WA Oaks), Buckets Ridge (LR Towton Cup) and Wild Belle (LR Miss Andretti Stakes).  He’s a half-brother to Hot And High and their dam High Conviction (Snitzel) has a yearling filly by Zousain.  Fogarty had purchased Group 3-winning second-dam Paris Petard (Mujahid) from Oakland Park for $100,000 at the 2011 Perth Magic Millions Autumn Sale.
