Angels Point signed off another successful month for Rommel in the Bunbury Equine Hospital Maiden (2013m) on Sunday.
Owned and trained at Gnangara by Bruno Monteleone, Angels Point was the fifth winner by the Ridgeport Farm sire in June following Tiger Tank (Northam), Achy Breaky (Belmont), Radiant Light (Kalgoorlie) and Baby Pearl (Belmont).
Angels Point settled well back in the running line behind front-runner Corso Venezia (Hi World) and then launched a potent finishing sprint in the straight for Natika Riordan to win pulling up by more than four lengths from Lucifer’s Lady (Choistar) and My Monster (Sessions).
Formerly with Mike Santich, the 3yo gelding was a bargain $3,000 buy from Clare Downs Stud at the 2024 Perth Magic Millions Winter Yearling Sale and is the third and final winner from Quambatook (State City). It’s the family of LR Scenic Blast Stakes (1200m) winner Cool Trade (Trade Fair) who was also bred at Mt Barker by Clare Downs owners Norm and Jeannine Burren.
Rommel maintained his lead at the top of the WA 2YO Sires’ table when Achy Breaky completed a running double at Belmont in the MC Polytrack Plate (1000m) on June 6. The Neville Parnham-trained filly crossed from an outside gate to sit outside the speed before seeing off Levati Dimezzo (King Of Comedy) and Farnova (Farnan).
Achy Breaky (2f Rommel – Breaking Cover by Smart Missile) had run an enormous fourth on debut behind Maria Lucia (Rommel) at Ascot in January and was spelled after coming to the end of her first prep the following month.
“We gave her time off and that was a good move because she’s continued to improve since coming back into work,” Parnham said. “She got the job done again today and is probably worth putting away for the better races next season.”
Achy Breaky was bred and sold by Mogumber Park for $26,000 at the 2025 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale and has banked over $173,000 including Westspeed Bonuses of $81,400.
Her dam Breaking Cover is a half-sister to News Alert (Danehill Dancer) who won five black-type sprints to Group 3 level in the Qld Tatt’s Healy Stakes (1200m) and she has a yearling colt and weanling colt by Mogumber Park sire Marine One (Capitalist).
Rommel (Commands) goes into the final month of the season with a substantial lead for the WA 2YO Sires’ premiership ($744,810) over Gingerbread Man ($537,420). He stands alongside Aysar (Deep Field) at Ridgeport Farm and both stallions are priced at $6,600 (inc GST) service fees.
