Absalon back home for Villiers

Absalon can complete a career-best year for Vinery sire Mossman in the G2 Villiers Stakes at Randwick this Saturday.

Absalon (5g Mossman – Danish Seaway by Danehill) is back home in Sydney after a successful hit-and-run raid to Brisbane for the LR Recognition Stakes (1600m) at Doomben last month.

The in-form miler is prepared by Sam Kavanagh for owner-breeder Gerry Harvey.  “He’s drawn wide which is a concern,” the rookie trainer said.  “I would have been confident with a better barrier.

“He’s got loads of talent and there doesn’t look to be a lot of speed in the race.  I’m hoping Brendon (Avdulla) can get him across without doing too much work.”

Victory in the time-honoured Villiers would be a significant boost to Kavanagh’s career so soon after branching out from his Group 1 winning father Mark.

And the $175,000 purse would also maintain Mossman’s position in the Top 6 on the Australian sires’ premiership this season.  He has sired 44 winners of 63 races for earnings over $3.08 million.

Mossman (Success Express) stands for a $19,800 (inc gst) service fee at Vinery.

He has 12 yearlings nominated for the 2014 Gold Coast Magic Millions including a brother to Parriwi (LR Lancaster Stakes – Lot 62), a colt from Allow (G1 Queensland Oaks – Lot 199) and a three-quarter brother to Royal Zulu Warrior (G2 SAf Charity Mile – Lot 221).
