Stewards abandoned Sunday’s Hobart meeting but not before well-bred mare Alainn motored home for a narrow victory in the Winning Edge Presentations Plate (1200m).
Alainn (4m Carnegie – Our Celerity by Sackford) has taken time to mature and trainer Charlie Goggin said she was overdue to deliver on the racetrack. “Her attitude was not the best but we’ve persevered,” he explained. “Being by Carnegie, you have to give them time and that’s certainly the case with this mare.”
Alainn is owned and raced by a Prime Thoroughbreds syndicate comprising Joe O’Neill, Wally Power, Norm Rance, Dennis Cassidy and Denis Adam.
O’Neill purchased the mare from Murrulla Stud for $22,000 as a foal at the 2009 Magic Millions National weanling sale. She is the 8th winner for NZ bred mare Our Celerity who is a half-sister to the G3 winners Rock You (Oregon) and Marnies Magic (Grosvenor).
“I bought her on breeding and I’m confident she can go on from here,” O’Neill said. “She is by Carnegie and they all take time. The track conditions also helped because the family all handle wet ground.”
Carnegie (Sadler’s Wells) won the 1994 Arc de Triomphe and transferred to Darley’s Kelvinside Stud in 2005. He was put down aged 21 in August.
