Amazing month for Sessions in Perth

Oakland Park resident Sessions is finishing a month to remember with his 3yo sons and daughters at Belmont.

Amazingly, for a second-season stallion, he has a sired a city double on three separate occasions in July.  And he’s done it with six different horses!

The Belmont run began with Western Rhythm & Paris Report on July 1.  Boomtastic & Massimo provided an encore on July 18 before Captain Kink & Put A Spell On You earned him a third curtain-call on July 25.

Combined Westspeed bonuses of $68,240 for Captain Kink & Put A Spell On You on Saturday saw Sessions finish in the Australian Top 10 for second-season sires with earnings of $1,709,470.

That’s the second-best total on record for a WA second-season sire…bettered only by Oratorio ($2,000,527) in 2009-10.

Captain Kink has built a 50% strike-rate since a first-up win at Ascot in April and a tailwind helped him record a front-running victory in the Glenroy Chaff Hcp (1300m) on Saturday.

“That was his fourth win this prep and he’s done a super job,” trainer Brett Pope said.  “I was going to tip him out but he keeps pulling up so well and just gets better and better.

“The Westspeed bonuses have also been a factor but he’s definitely going out for a spell now.”

Captain Kink was bred and sold by Taunton Vale for $35,000 at the 2018 Perth Magic Millions and has earned $192,200 in prizemoney and bonuses.  His dam Rosie Redlips (Tale Of The Cat) is a winning half-sister to Rose Of Choice (LR Jungle Dawn Classic).

The family has accumulated generations of black-type going back to 1983 WA Oaks winner Lowanna Rose (Medal).

Put A Spell On You was overdue for Hall Of Fame trainer Fred Kersley in the Crown Perth Hcp (1400m).  The Oakland Park homebred had been caught wide at all three runs this campaign before apprentice Madi Derrick made the most of an inside gate on Saturday.

“She’s had no luck from outside barriers,” Kersley said.  “Today’s draw and the 3kg claim made all the difference.  Madi got her out just in time and they hit the line strong.”

Put A Spell On You is from Danish Magic (Danewin) who landed the $600,000 Heroic Championship at Randwick before retiring to stud in the Hunter Valley.  Oakland Park’s Neville Duncan bought her for $14,000 at the 2015 Inglis Broodmare Sale in Sydney and she produced two foals by Sessions in WA before being pensioned.

Her final foal is an unraced 2yo colt named Trickmeister who was retained by Ben Duncan.

Oakland Park stands Sessions (Lonhro) for $3,850 this season alongside King’s Troop (Redoute’s Choice) at $3,300.  Both fees (inc GST).
