Former Lindsay Park galloper Gothic Samurai scored an easy barrier-to-box victory in a $30,000 allowance event over 1700m at Hollywood Park on Saturday.
Gothic Samurai (4g Genuine – Gothic Darkness by Comrade) set a slow pace in front under Garrett Gomez and had enough in reserve to defeat even-money favourite Concerto’s Thunder by 1.5 lengths on his debut in the United States.
Gothic Samurai had three starts in Australia before an enforced transfer to California. He was unplaced behind Wilander at Ballarat in January 2008 and returned six months later for a fifth to Trustus at Sandown. He bled during that run and was sidelined until January this year when he won a Geelong maiden.
He bled for the second time at Geelong and was barred for good in Australia. Owner-breeder Arnold Kelsey sent him to North America where bleeding is not a lifetime sentence.
Based with leading trainer Neil Drysdale, the gelding was due to debut earlier this month but was scratched after becoming fractious in the barriers.
Gothic Samurai is by former Chatswood Stud sire Genuine who didn’t fire while shuttling to Australia apart from Pompeii Ruler who was a Group 1 winner of the 2007 VRC Australian Cup and 2009 AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Gothic Samurai is out of the Bart Cummings trained filly Gothic Darkness who won on debut at Caulfield in February 1998. She is related to G1 South Australian Oaks winner Brunisse (El Seetu) and her other foals include MVRC Leilani Classic winner Gothic Marian (Way of Light).
Drysdale will nominate Gothic Samurai for another allowance race at Del Mar next month.
