The Tattersalls December Sale got off to a positive start on Monday when a sister to Ballydoyle colt Mikhail Glinka topped the one-day yearling sale at 275,000gns (AUD 523,000).
Australian breeder Paul Makin was the vendor and the filly was purchased by the Duke of Bedford. By Galileo, she is out of the Mark Of Esteem mare Lady Karr and she had received a significant catalogue update when Mikhail Glinka finished second in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud earlier this month.
Her dam Lady Karr is a sister to 2006 English Derby winner Sir Percy who shuttles to Rich Hill Stud in NZ. “She’s going to John Hammond,” said the Duke. “You can’t buy a more exciting page and let’s hope she’s as good as her brother, who looks a very exciting prospect.”
The one-day yearling sale saw rises across the board with 153 lots sold for 3.48 million guineas (AUD 6.60 million) at an average of 22,789 guineas (AUD 43,285).
A High Chaparral filly was next on the leader board at 210,000 gns (AUD 398,850). She was purchased by Eddie Stobart CEO Andrew Tinkler and is a half-sister to three black-type winners including Diamond Green. “She’s a really nice filly,” said Tinkler. “It’s a good page and she will be not just for racing but hopefully we can breed from her in the future. We picked out a few out and this filly was top of the tree.
The final three yearlings to be offered at public auction by Sadler’s Wells appeared on Monday. They were headed by a colt out of 2003 Irish Oaks runner-up L’Ancresse that sold for 160,000gns (AUD 303,965) to Tom Goff.
“He will be trained by John Gosden and was as nice a middle-distance colt as I’ve seen here today,” said Goff. “He’s out of a Darshaan mare so it’s a stallion’s pedigree.”
The Tattersalls December Sale will continue on Wednesday, November 25 with a four-day foal sale.
