Awapuni raider wins Winter Cup

Awapuni-based galloper Superturf (NZ) picked up his first black-type in the G3 Winter Cup (1600m) at Riccarton on Saturday.

Superturf (5g Black Minnaloushe – Alfred’s Jewel by Le Belvedere) rewarded trainer Greg Lambert’s decision to travel south to Christchurch.  The gelding revelled in the heavy conditions to win by three-quarters-of- a-length from Ishiabeel (Ishiguru) and Tick Tock Turbo (Turbulent Dancer).

Lambert also part-owns the winner with his wife Adele and Duncan Cheetham, Barbara Montgomerie, Mike Stewart, Sue Stewart, Kevin Tod and Phillip Wenham.

Bred by the Lambert family’s Lambourn Stud at Palmerston North, Superturf is the 22nd stakes winner for former Windsor Park Stud shuttler Black Minnaloushe.

His dam Alfred’s Jewel won five races in Australia and she is also the dam of the multiple winner King Kalani (Ashkalani).  They hail from a successful Lambourn family that includes G1 Marlboro Cup and Elders Mile winner King Phoenix (Amyntor) and G2 Chairman’s Handicap winner Steel Phoenix (Nassipour).
