Caulfield based filly City of Song joined a select group of stakes winners with a narrow victory in the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes at her home track on Saturday.
Her sire Bel Esprit has been represented by 96 individual winners in Australia so far this season but only two of them have graduated to black-type – City Of Song and Black Caviar!
City Of Song (2f Bel Esprit – Songs Of Vienna by Umatilla) is prepared by John Moloney for owner-breeder Colin Beggs. She had won on debut at Sandown Hillside on March 2 but had been unlucky in defeat at both Caulfield and Moonee Valley in her subsequent efforts.
Moloney and Beggs won the Listed Straight Six at Flemington with her dam Songs Of Vienna. They also won a Caulfield race with her older sister Music In The Park in April 2009.
“She’s a really good filly that’s going to be better in the spring,” Moloney said. “She will head to the paddock for a break and we will look towards a race like the Thousand Guineas in the spring. She should get 1600m.”
A half brother to City of Song by former outstanding sprinter Magnus is a member of the Eliza Park draft for the Magic Millions National yearling sale (Lot 1711) in June.
Eliza Park has a 30 strong draft for the National Sale including 12 for the National Yearling Sale. Their others include yearlings by Redoute’s Choice, Bernardini, Fastnet Rock, Exceed and Excel and Lonhro.
