Luck’s a fortune for Ferocity filly

Promising filly Lucky Morna raced into contention for Brisbane’s winter carnival juvenile features with an impressive win in the Becks 2YO Hcp (1200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Lucky Morna (2f Ferocity – Forty Winks by Iglesia) is trained by renowned horseman Kelso Wood and she sat off the leaders before coming home with a blistering turn of foot in the straight.  She raced away to beat Paladin (All Bar One) by more than three lengths while Easy Successful (Easy Rocking) was another two lengths back in third place.

Wood was impressed with the runaway win and he is already regretting a recent decision not to enter the filly for Brisbane’s feature two-year-old event.  “She’ll run in the Sires’ Produce Stakes but I didn’t nominate her for the T J Smith,” Wood said.  “I might have to pay a late entry for that race now.”

Lucky Morna was racing for the third time and relished the step up to 1200 metres.  She was a $35,000 buy from Oaklands Stud at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions.  Wood returned to purchase her full sister from Oaklands for $28,000 this year.

Lucky Morna is a daughter of Oaklands Stud sire Ferocity and is his sixth individual juvenile winner this season.  The winner is a real Oaklands Stud graduate – her dam Forty Winks is a sister to 2006 Magic Millions 2YO Classic runner-up Reigart.  He was later sold to Hong Kong where he raced with success under the name Fly High.

Another half sister Power Nap is the dam of the former Singapore star Hulk who was a Listed Kranji Sprint and Juvenile Championship.

Forty Winks has a yearling filly by Ferocity named Kath’s Secret and the mare also has a colt on the ground by the same sire.
