Best in the west wins Belmont Stakes

Perth star Luckygray has issued a strong warning to his eastern counterparts ahead of the Melbourne spring carnival.

Luckygray (4g Bradbury’s Luck – Damah Lady by Mukaddamah) confirmed his rating as the best in the west with an authoritative victory in the G3 Belmont Stakes (1400m) on Saturday.

The Gino Poletti trained galloper shouldered 61kg and came from last to win by over a length eased down.  It followed his first-up victory in the G3 Roma Cup on May 26.  “He had plenty to overcome including a couple of hefty bumps on the corner” Poletti said.  “I thought he was vulnerable but, ridden to his strengths, he is lethal.”

Luckygray will start again in the G3 Hyperion Stakes later this month before going for a spell.  “Each time I go through the spring carnival calendar, I keep finding a better race for him,” Poletti explained.  “We will have six weeks after the Hyperion to get him over to Melbourne and firm up a final program.”

The grey gelding opened his career with a winning hat-trick as a summer three year-old before finishing second to Playing God in the 2011 Perth Magic Millions 3YO Trophy.  He returned earlier this season for a G3 victory in the Asian Beau Stakes at Ascot prior to winning the G1 Railway Stakes in a controversial protest over NZ miler He’s Remarkable.

Bradbury’s Luck has been represented by 84 winners of 185 races at a 59% strike-rate.  He got Luckygray is from a winning half-sister to G2 STC Todman Slipper Stakes winner (Catbird).

Bradbury’s Luck (Redoute’s Choice) stands at Glenlogan Park for a $6,600 (inc gst) fee.
