Sydney stakes winner Bhutane Dane has won two of his last three starts in Macau and the latest was a short-head victory in The Hamamatsu (1500m) on Saturday.
Bhutane Dane (5g Danehill Dancer – Joleur by Bite The Bullet) failed to fulfil his potential in Australia and is now raced by a Macau Racing Club syndicate managed by James Carstairs and Tobi Doeringer.
Gai Waterhouse originally bought him for $360,000 at the 2007 Gold Coast Magic Millions. He began paying back that purchase price with Listed victories in the Heritage Stakes and Strada Stakes in Sydney. He was also a close up sixth to Tempest Tost in the Magic Millions 3YO Trophy after suffering severe interference in the straight.
Bhutane Dane was being set for the 2009 G1 The Galaxy and G1 T J Smith but was sidelined for six months. He returned as a spring four year-old but didn’t beat a runner home in two starts and was soon shown the door at Tulloch Lodge.
A son of Coolmore Stud’s champion sire Danehill Dancer, Bhutane Dane is a half brother to Listed Baillieu Handicap winner Gaze On (Intergaze). His younger half-sister Upon This Rock (Fastnet Rock) won at Warwick Farm and Canterbury for Waterhouse last year.
Bhutane Dane is one of 25 horses in work with Geoff Allendorf. “He took a while to settle into Macau but all his earlier runs had been encouraging in stronger company,” the expat Aussie trainer said. “He’s got a great attitude and is a lovely relaxed horse.”
