High Chaparral kick-started the 2011 NZB Premier yearling sale on Monday morning when his colt from Queen Caelia sold for $600,000. Catalogued as Lot 1, the colt was offered by Windsor Park and was purchased by Victorian based Surf Coast Racing.
High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) shuttled to Windsor Park Stud for five seasons from 2005 to 2009. His penultimate Kiwi crop numbered just 54 foals and that ensures the 35 yearlings at Karaka this week will be in demand.
High Chaparral sired G1 winners So You Think, Descarado, Monaco Consul and Shoot Out from his initial southern season. His second crop includes the Shaun Ritchie trained Hidden Asset who was a G2 winner of the Championship Stakes at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day.
The High Chaparral – Queen Caelia (Sir Tristram) filly is a younger brother to the Peter Moody trained G3 winner Fairy Oak who sold for $140,000 at the 2008 NZB Premier yearling sale.
Fairy Oak won a Kilmore maiden in April 2010 and made a swift transition to stakes company when taking out the G3 SAJC Auraria Stakes at Morphettville a fortnight later.
Flemington trainer Brian Mayfield –Smith originally prepared the filly before handing her over to Moody on his retirement. Her dam Queen Caelia is a half-sister to the G1 winners Field Dancer and Just a Dancer.
Among the High Chaparral yearlings to parade during Karaka’s second session on Tuesday are Lot 293 – Half-brother to South African G1 winner Gold Onyx from the family of Amalfi and Lot 439 – Half-brother to the G1 VRC Derby winner Kibbutz
