Mr Big confirmed his status as one of the rising stars of Singapore racing when he led home a Magic Millions clean-sweep in the G2 Aushorse Golden Horseshoe (1200m) at Kranji on Friday night.
Mr Big (2g Elusive Quality – Basamaat by Danehill) fended off a late challenge to narrowly defeat Dark Matter (Stratum). Third placed Awakened (Barely A Moment) was three lengths away.
The winner collected a S$90,000 bonus on top of the event’s total prizemoney of S$325,000. Magic Millions has taken Singapore by storm in recent seasons and its graduates filled the first five places in the Golden Horseshoe!
Mr Big was a $21,000 buy from the draft of Yarraman Park at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions. He had burst onto the scene the previous Friday with an eight length victory at Kranji.
“Ten days ago I didn’t think I had a horse for the race with a realistic chance,” trainer Michael Freedman commented. “I wouldn’t normally back-up a two-year-old but he’s a tough little bugger. He hadn’t left an oat since last Friday so we decided to have a go.”
Aushorse chiefs Peter McGuaran and Antony Thompson were on hand at Kranji to present the trophies following the finale to the hugely successful $1 million Golden Horseshoe Series.
Also on course to catch the action was Magic Millions Director of Sales David Chester. “The series is a wonderful concept and it was great to see Australian breds dominate the race,” Chester said. “And having Magic Millions graduates lead the way was fantastic.”
Mr Big is bred on the same Elusive Quality – Danehill cross as G1 Blue Diamond and G1 Golden Slipper winner Sepoy.
His dam Basamaat is an Irish bred daughter of G3 Royal Ascot Queen Mary Stakes winner Shining Hour (Red Ransom). She has a yearling colt by Shamardal and weanling colt by Henny Hughes. The mare was covered by Mossman last year.
